The area now known as Show Low was first settled in the early 1880s by Mormon pioneers. Corydon E. Cooley and Marion Clark were two early arrivals who settled on a 100,000-acre ranch around 1875.

However, the two men ultimately decided that there was not enough room for both of their homes in the settlement. They agreed to let a game of poker decide who was to move. According to the story, neither man was getting the upper hand in the game when finally, Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and, inspired by Clark's words, declared, "Show Low it is."

The sizable ranch's new name quickly became associated with the entire settlement. Show Low's main street is named "Deuce of Clubs" in honor of this event.
